Automobile Transport

Sometimes driving just won't work. Perhaps you don't want to make the big cross-country trip with the kids in the back. Or maybe you'd like to try train travel. Or maybe you need to be at your new home quickly and only flying will get you there on time. Whatever the situation, there are many times when it makes good sense to have one or more of your vehicles moved professionally.

It's important to understand your options when it comes to automobile transport. Two main options exist for transporting your vehicle: open transport or closed transport.

Open transport places your vehicle on a trailer without protection from the elements and within plain view. Most people are familiar with this type of transport, having seen new cars on their way to dealerships, etc. This method is the most cost-effective solution for having your vehicle moved. While the lack of protection from the elements may initially sound like a bad thing, consider that driving your car would also lack protection from the elements. For the majority of individuals, this is an excellent option.

Closed transport fully encloses your vehicle in a trailer. This offers protection from the elements and also conceals the vehicle from view. This method of transport is less familiar to the average person simply due to the fact that they've never noticed it before (because these trailers look, by and large, like any other non-descript trailer on the road). While this method is more expensive than open transport, it does deliver more security and protection for your vehicle. In general, closed transport is selected by those individuals more concerned with security and protection. Examples include expensive, rare, or otherwise prized vehicles.

Helpful Hints

  • Remove all personal items from the vehicle prior to pickup. The carrier will not accept responsibility for them during transport.
  • Do a careful walkaround of your vehicle with the driver at both pickup and dropoff.
  • Look over the Bill of Lading and make sure you understand what you're signing.
  • Disable your car alarm before loading. The driver needs to be able to move your vehicle in your absence.
  • Wash you car thoroughly and document its condition prior to loading. Photos are an excellent record of its pre-loading condition and the wash will ensure that its condition can best be proved.
  • Consult with your JPPSO/Personal Property Office/Transportation Office to ask about claiming mileage to offset your transport costs.
